Personal Career Blog
I'll be honest, I had no idea what I wanted to do after I graduated. I was going through all these scenarios in my head about what I wanted to do. I realized I should just do what I love the most and help create stories. I am proud to say I can follow that passion. Hi, my name is Mike, and I come from a small town named Wallingford, Connecticut. I am eighteen years old, and I have just begun my first year of college at Middlesex Community College. I have just graduated from Lyman Hall High School, and I am looking to further my education. I have always had an interest in media ever since I was a child, particularly movies, television, books, and games. I have always been fascinated with these subjects, and I have spent much of my life indulging in them. I remember ever since I was a child I wanted to be involved in the storytelling process, whether it be movie or show, I wanted some way to contribute to this medium of conveying ideas and messages. This is my career choice because I desire to have a visual and aesthetic touch on whatever is being filmed, and it could possibly open up new opportunities, like working for different companies or people, or being able to go places and experiencing new things, all while partaking in a career I can enjoy.
I will be the first to admit I am not the most technically skilled or academically smart person, but there are several things I feel I am good at. The first thing I feel I am skilled at is working with people. I am a very open-minded and friendly person, and I feel that I work well in groups with others. I have good communication skills, and can easily work with people in a group to accomplish a specific task or goal. I think this will be useful in the media industry especially because you have to work with many different types of people who may have different opinions on how to complete a goal, and so by being open-minded and personable I feel I am fairly skilled in communicating and working with other people.
My long-term goals include things related to my career, but also things which are more personal and related more to the lifestyle goals I want. For my career, my goal is to have a financially stable career which I also enjoy in the next ten years of my life. I want to be able to wake up every day and go do something I love, rather than wake up every day to a job I hate. I want to be doing something which is fulfilling and something I am passionate about, such as working with film and video. Another goal, which is very far in the future, would be settling down and starting a family. As of right now, there would be no way, both emotionally and financially, for me to start a family. I am simply too young, and I want to experience my young adult years without much responsibility. My current choice would be to live in a city, such as New York or Boston. The reason I have chosen a city, in particular, New York, is because there is an incredible amount of things which interest me, such as the culture and lifestyle of the city, to all the media related things which are located in New York like movies.
I am confident in myself and in the career I have selected. My goal here has been to inform and give insight into myself and what my motivations are for the immediate and far future. My career choice is to be a cinematographer, so I can apply a creative and professional look to what I decide to film. I hope my skills of being good at communicating and being creative can help me overcome my obstacles of both technical and work experience. One day I hope to have a career I love, and to be happy, surrounded by people I love. My focus right now is the on the present, and I hope to make a strong start to a long and happy life.
Movie Review
There are many movies I love and many I would put into my all time favorite list. But there is one set of movies I keep coming back to more often than not, and those movies are the Lord of the Rings movies. More specifically, The Fellowship of the Ring. FOTR as I will refer to it would have to be my favorite movie of all time. I first saw it at a young age, and it has captivated me every since. This movie has just been embedded into me, and my whole family and I know almost all the lines and repeat them every once and a while. This has just been a movie that I can always enjoy no matter when or where I am.
The first thing which comes to mind is the actors and the movie's story. Every actor does such a magnificent job at portraying their character, the line becomes blurred between the two. First of all, the story is one which is very unique, and has a long lasting impression on you. The story follows Frodo, a young hobbit who has been sent on a quest to destroy the one ring, a ring which will grant the Dark Lord Sauron his power. This story evokes such a strong sense of emotion, and the viewer feels very attached to the characters on screen. The most obvious one is Frodo since he is the main protagonist, but also you feel attached to Arargorn, the mysterious hair to the throne. throughout the story there are many moments where tension is felt. Overall, it is a wonderful story where the characters do a great job entertaining and pulling at the viewer's heartstrings.
The next thing FOTR does so well is the visual effects. The visual effects of FOTR are beyond incredible. The reason may be because of FOTR being in the sweet pot where practical effects and CGI were being used wisely together, creating a perfect blend of realism and fantasy. Even today, the effects still hold up very nicely. The battle scenes are extremely stunning, particularity the Mines of Moria sequence. Everything from the hundreds of goblins to the massive Balrog, everything looks extremely polished and well done.
The last thing FOTR does amazing is the music. i cannot state enough about how much I love the music of this movie. The music is composed by Howard Shore, and everything he produced for this movie is incredible. The music helps tell the story, and gives the correct amount of emotion at the correct times. Never does the music falter, and it always sounds beautiful and majestic. Whenver I hear the score for this movie I immediate know what it is, and my love of this movie is reminded.
What I Have Learned
Over the past couple of months, I have learned an exorbitant amount of information. Everything I need to know about media I have gained from this class in particular. I am extremely thankful for the opportunity I have had here so far at Middlesex Community College, and I look forward to all the future knowledge I will gain. After all the guest speakers, and after all the lectures, I have learned quite a number of things which will help me in my career in the media industry.
The first thing I have learned how to do is to properly network. My professor Richard Lenoce has been adamant about getting us, the students, to network and talk to people who come in to speak. Mr. Lenoce has told us time and again that one of the only ways to properly establish connections is to talk to people when you meet them, and to establish social links. An example of a social link is the website LinkedIn. LinkedIn is a website that is based on the idea of meeting new people in the same career interest as you. Throughout the entire semester I have been linking and getting in contact with new people, and establish my presence in the media world.
Another thing I have learned about is simply all the different and diverse jobs and careers in the world of media. Going into my first semester, I had a vague idea of what I wanted to do. However, after taking Careers in Media, I now have a plethora of options to choose from when deciding my career choice. I have seen all the different jobs, ranging from assistant director, to animator, to working on the news. All of these different careers fascinate me greatly, and I am glad to have learned them.
The most important thing thought I think is how to communicate. I have learned how we must act adults and as people of media. I think this is the most important thing because without knowing how to act, how do expect to obtain job.
